Debate Adam Sandler

For all the criticism he receives, career wise Sandler is still doing well. He's got a movie deal with Netflix. An upcoming comedy special directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. He received good reviews for his performance in The Meyerowitz Stories. And he also has the third installment of his successful animated franchise Hotel Transylvania coming out this summer. All in all he's doing pretty good.

His work with Paul Thomas Anderson in Punch Drunk Love was fantastic, one of my favorite romcoms ever. Unfortunately this Netflix deal isn't a feature film, it's just a comedy show so I wouldn't get too excited. As for Adam doing ok, I'm sure he is, relative to normal people. But I think what people mean when they say his career is tanking is that he's no longer cranking out major studio blockbusters every 2 years like he did through the 90s. According to the Sony email leaks published in 2015, executives didn't like how expensive he was, and that's why they stopped casting him. Moneywise he had a great run so I'm sure he'll have tons of $ for the rest of his life. Career wise, I guess success is determined by ticket sales and positive reviews which he hasn't really gotten for a while. If he & PTA team up for another feature film like Punch Drunk, that's when I'll get happy.

He’s definitely not as big as he used to be, and he’s no longer starring in big box office comedies. But career wise, I still think he’s doing well. For me, I don’t think you can necessarily label success as an actor by just box office receipts. Sandler’s deal with Netflix essentially allows him to develop whatever comedies he wants. As an actor that gives him opportunities that many actors out there don’t have. He gets to make what he wants and gets paid (well) to do it. As an actor, I feel like that has to be a major goal.

Also, I would love to see him work with PTA again. I like when he takes on untraditional roles for himself like in Punch Drunk Love.

That's a good point and it reminds me of Orson Welles who said he sunk all his profits into making unpopular films that bombed. And that's how we got all those masterpieces that critics called failures.

Recently Sandler did some movies that weren't boxoffice hits, but I thought they were great. I loved The Cobbler. I also liked Funny People where he played a similar "Punch Drunk" dark/oddball character. I think you're right, if his Netflix deal allows him to get creative and find his own direction, I predict we're going to see some good stuff.
