Biography

Joel F. Gardiner is a Calgary based filmmaker, actor, writer, and composer whose passions lie at the intersection of genre storytelling, analog craft, and community driven cinema. With roots in Calgary’s underground comedy scene, Joel founded the skit comedy troupe Pi/4 in the early 2000s, where he wrote, directed, acted, and composed original music for avant-garde comedic shorts.

He is best known for originating the iconic character FPS Doug in "Pure Pwnage", one of the earliest viral web series centered on gaming culture, which later transitioned into a television series on Canada’s Showcase and a widely viewed feature film. His portrayal cemented the catchphrase “BOOM! HEADSHOT!” in gaming lore.

Joel later collaborated with Clinton Jones of Corridor Digital fame on the viral shorts "Cardboard Warfare 2" and "The Death of Gary Goldwater", projects celebrated for blending humor with high-production VFX in creative, low-fi packaging.

In 2023, he founded Cosmic Darkness Productions, a Calgary-based studio specializing in atmospheric, genre-driven storytelling. There he wrote, directed, and produced the short film "A Dollar Short for the Ferryman’s Fee", and co-produced a narrative music video based on "Collective Unconscious" by the band Ride the Sky, working with local collaborators like Thunder Lizard Collective.

With a commitment to practical effects, handcrafted aesthetics, and heartfelt performance, Joel champions mentorship and collaboration within Calgary’s creative community. His work embraces the tactile spirit of classic cinema while forging new paths for independently-minded genre filmmakers.
