I do recall them being successful but were they really as big as say Britney & Xtina peaks ?

Wannabe was enormous and the first album did sell over 6-7 million copies but that's probably because they were much more "kids acts" than teen acts, I think. Overall extremely successful up until the second album.

It doesn’t sound like they were that massive bombing the second era.

They were massive actually. They had three consecutive Top 5s on the Hot 100 and their second album still sold well enough but it ended afterwards.

Spice was the best selling album of 1997 in the US. They were big everywhere although they didn't really have a big range in demographic. By the end of 1997 when Spice came out, there certainly was a Spice fatigue and by mid 98 majority of people that I knew that had showed some interest in The Spice Girls were over them. They were a definition of a fad
