I loved him in the Sherlock Holmes series and just adored him in My Fair Lady. Love the scene where he sang On the Street Where you LIve...

I miss this wonderful actor.

I'm not a fan of My Fair Lady but On the Street Where You Live - along with Wilfrid Hyde-White - is one of the few things I like about it.

Jeremy Brett was a wonderful Sherlock Holmes, I vividly remember enjoying him in the role as a kid.

I never found out, till some point after his death, that Mr. Brett was the same person as the young man in My Fair Lady, and haven't watched the movie since then. In the movie, does he look recognizably like his later self, or so young and different that he seems like another person?

He certainly was absolutely brilliant in Sherlock Holmes. That performance was a master class in amazing acting.

I didn't realise it was him in My Fair Lady either, his look was striking, maybe it was the top hat wink When I checked his filmography I certainly was surprised.

The sad thing is that it is not him singing. Audrey Hepburn's singing was dubbed by soprano Marni Nixon and Brett's singing by tenor/baritone singer Bill Shirley.

Jeremy Brett talks about it here: "Jeremy Brett on My Fair Lady 1994"

It seems like there is going to be a remake of "My Fair Lady". Emma Thompson is writing the screenplay.
Here are two articles :

There's no reason for Emma Thompson to go lightly on Audrey Hepburn

Audrey Hepburn 'couldn't sing and couldn't act', says Emma Thompson

I've just lost some respect for Emma Thompson. I've seen better actor's in my time. Thompson is not overly special. I hope her version is a flop. Audrey Hepburn is still remembered and loved to this day. I doubt Miss Thompson will be in years to come.

I knew about Jeremy Brett, that still doesn't change my opinion of him relaxed

I agree. He was a great actor and could have done so much more, perhaps even completing all the 60 adventures of Sherlock Holmes.

From the clip, other than at a moment or two, here and there, where I could recognize something vaguely familiar looking, I'd for the most part never realize that was Jeremy Brett.

As for Emma Thompson, I personally have never much cared for her. I'm not saying that I think she's not a good actress, as that wouldn't be accurate or what I mean. She simply doesn't impress me, and I don't think she's any big deal.

Also, I think that My Fair Lady is one of those movies that the public wouldn't be inclined to take to a remake of. I doubt it would be more than a strictly marginal success at best. That having been said, there could be an exception, I think: I believe it would probably be highly successful as a television live-event production, and that, in such case, viewers would probably eat it up.

Of course, Brett and Hepburn can sing slight_smile , probably better than the current popular singers, who often resort to auto tune, play back and lip sync.

But the directors and producers prefer to dub them with singers, who they consider as better, and that's a pity. frowning_face

I hope you don't think I was disparaging your comment Wonder, I certainly didn't mean to. I was just watching some YouTube re Jeremy and found he had a great singing voice relaxed

It's all right, my reaction was not directed towards you relaxed , but towards the film industry that tend to use dubbing as a standard to "improve" a movie, like adding artificial colours and flavours to food.

Thanks for the link, it proves how wrong they were by not using his voice. slight_smile

As far as I know, at least they haven't dubbed his voice in "Sherlock Holmes" wink

I grew up with Brett's Sherlock Holmes by far the best Sherlock Holmes I've seen.

I agree! I don't think any other actor, no matter how great, will ever top Brett's Sherlock Holmes. He's the ultimate Sherlock!
