So who exactly was fighting?

I would imagine in a movie called "civil war" about a civil war it'd be a pretty crucial point to explain who are the belligerents. However unless I missed something the closest they come to explaining that is that they mention that California and Texas have allied and seceded. Now the problem is that the movie shows the side with California and Texas clearly having the upper hand which obviously begs the question of how exactly is that possible with quite possibly dozens of other states against them. Also can somebody kindly direct me to the direction of the civil war that we are told is raging because apart from the last 10 or 15 minutes of this movie it wasn't really anywhere to be found. Most of the movie is a bunch of journalists leisurely taking pictures and they are rather shallow characters that you don't really care for. All in all a rather mediocre movie and it is hard to see what all the fuzz and praise was about.

I was confused as well. Most of movie is just about the journalists emotions/feelings. My guess is they intentionally didn't define the belligerents to convey a message to the audience that Americans don't know who/what they are fighting for. It could be a dozen other messages.

Indeed, the film left these questions open, but I believe its main message is to show how society can quickly fall into decline due to political reasons and a lack of information, or even because of confusing messages and communication breakdowns. It also highlights how human beings can descend into a state of unconsciousness.
