For me...
I never considered myself a Wes Anderson fan even though I think he's a brilliant director, a meticulous perfectionist with an original approach to storytelling. His films seem a bit too inside-jokey to me (which is frustrating when you don't get the joke).
But wow, Moonrise Kingdom really blew me away. I think it's his best work by far, because even though it's in his heavy signature style it's stripped down to a simple story that everyone can get. It nails the perfect balance between art film and crowd pleaser without compromising anything.
I think his first film Bottle Rocket also had that simplicity which is why I rank it 2nd. But Moonrise had the added charm of the kids and gorgeous scenery. I haven't seen anything he's done after that (2012) but I hope to see a few. Any suggestions?
