This is a compilation of three separate short black & white films, all ostensibly made in the 1950s.
The first section opens with a man (unnamed) approaching Rubinstein to convince him to participate in a film project. After a brief demure, Rubinstein invites him to his home that evening. Cut to Rubinstein's "home" where he is practicing Mendelssohn. The earlier man enters and after a few words, Rubinstein plays for him:
Mendelssohn: Lied ohne Worte (Song without words) op.67/4 (popularly known as the "Spinning Song")
Liszt: Liesbestraum no.3 S.541/3
Chopin: Waltz in C♯ minor op.64/2
There follows a brief conversation about Rubinstein's life and career and he shows off some artwork. Then, Rubinstein plays:
Chopin: Polonaise ("Military") in A op.40/1
To wrap up that part, Rubinstein is joined by his wife and young children.
The second segment is a segment filmed again in Rubinstein's "home" where he entertains several guests one evening with music and stories. On the all-Chopin program are:
Prelude in F♯ minor op.28/8
Mazurka in C♯ minor op.30/4
Scherzo no. 3 in C♯ minor op.39
Nocturne in F♯ op.15/2
Polonaise in A♭ ("Heroic") op.53
In the third segment, reportedly filmed for LIFE Magazine, Rubinstein is joined by Jascha Heifetz and Gregor Piatigorsky for performances of:
Schubert: Piano Trio in B♭ D.898 (1st movement)
Mendelssohn: Piano Trio no. 1 in D minor op.49 (1st, 2nd, and 3rd movements)
There are some brief discussions between the musicians about the piece as they rehearse (seeming rather staged), before the performance.
