Discuss Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes

As I get myself entrenched in the world of the reboot POTA series, I seriously ponder this question and I must cynically say no, they cannot. Humans can't even get along with each other as such trivial things such as religious beliefs, political leanings, and even the color of our skin divides us. Having an entire species as intelligent as us side by side as equals? Can never happen. This is how Neanderthals became extinct. They were not bred out ,they were exterminated. The film really did have me rooting for Mae and Noa to form an alliance that would pave the way of things to come and for the sake of positivity, I hope the story does take a positive turn. But Noa is right to mistrust humans and he doesn't even know the half of it.

Of the POTA reboot I've only seen the 1st (which I liked), but this is a great topic that has driven all the POTA films. I agree that there's no way we could ever share the planet with another species as equals. The only reason we've gotten on this far with dogs, cats, horses and other domesticated species is because they are our pets. We're the masters, and the minute a pet bares its teeth we're justified legally and morally to kill it and assert our dominance. This point was the driving theme of Conquest of the POTA (1972), where a plague had wiped out cats & dogs so humans turned to apes as a replacement.

Recent political events around the world show us that racism, nationalism and sexism are still the hot issues, i.e. Us vs. Them. We can't even share the planet with our own kind, much less other primate versions of us with 2 extra chromosomes.

I think you're right that Neanderthals and all competing primates were exterminated by our ancestors. 2001: A Space Odyssey nailed it. The dominant species is the one that obliterates all its rivals, whether it's an ape, a foreign country, or an intelligent computer.

If you are a fan of the old series then I highly recommend you watch the reboot series. It does an excellent job of coming up with original ideas for the storyline while simultaneously showing reverence for the original material. I especially enjoyed this last entry as the story appears to be picking up steam and to say more would be spoiling it. 🙂

I actually think the first entry is the weakest of the new series so if you enjoyed that one, you will like the rest.

Sold, I'll start catching up this week. I bought the first 2 on blu-ray a while ago and I was waiting until I bought the 3rd so I could binge the full trilogy in one sitting. But now that they've released a 4th (and possibly more to come?) I might as well get up to speed.

We might entering into a situation where humans and humans can't co-exist so it seems unlike we'd manage it with anything else!
