Yes, that was the correct title - and with no "The Vampire Chronicles" subtext either.
A famous example of the Mandela Effect on a par with "if you build it, they will come" and Moonraker's Jaws' girlfriend's disappearing braces. Very odd...
The book its based on is called Interview with the Vampire, I don't ever remember it being any other title and it always had the the Vampire Chronicles subtext too as far as I remember. Shame there was never a sequel with the same cast.
Wait, what?? You mean she doesn't have braces? I'd go to my grave testifying she had braces. Unless you're talking about a Lucas type "Greedo shot first" re-edit. (even so, why?)
Regarding "Interview with [?] Vampire", I have a 1st edition book and it's Interview with THE Vampire. My guess is any confusion might be due to advertisements, posters or movie critics getting the name wrong. Since it was pre-internet, nobody could quickly look it up and set the record straight.

My guess is that "A" is how the theaters released it, and yes, the internet is just now correcting it.

No, it was always 'the'. The problem is in enunciation - 'With the' when spoken quickly and depending on accents can sound like 'With a' some people might say "Wi' the" or "Wi' tha" and you can see where over time the line between the two begin to blur.
Just to add, I also have a VHS from the 90s (one of those big box UK ex-rental ones) and it's a 'the' on there too...

Solved! Next up, we'll tackle "Sex and the City" vs. "Sex in the City" ;)

Interestingly enough, in France and Germany, for some reason, both the novel and film were translated as "Interview with a Vampire".

Was it? That's a strange title change. I don't notice much difference between the 2 titles. Might have been a legal thing with the book?

Always known it as 'the' so maybe I'm from a parallel universe...?
*Edit just checked my library and the book is 'the' as well... Maybe you're from a parallel universe...?
