In the previews you see a lady working at a machine and you see both Swan and a large device near him glow and vanish so you reason out fast that it is by machine he travels. They just didn't show that he is actually an unwilling pawn in the time travel experiment. Makes him less nifty though he still drives a great bike.
This film was made by Monkee singer Michael Nesmith ( is that why a monkey is going back in time?). He was so left-wingish and bad you can bet his writings in this film are evident. Bad, murderous lawmen, a gun toting Christian priest. Possible the priest in the movie is really a phony.
Is the ending possibly this. That Claire Cygne( French for swan) makes a mistake thinking she is Lyle Swann's direct ancestor. Despite same last name in different languages maybe she never goes to Los Angeles to find him. Supporting this is how does she have a kid in those tough times with her last name?
