In the middle of the movie, there is a boat explosion. What I'm wondering, just before two characters said something to one another and had odd looks on their faces. I'm wondering if they maybe faked their deaths or something? I wouldn't think so since the explosion happened right where they were sitting, but was a strange shot Pakula did there.

This entire movie is one big strange shot. You got a point, though, it is possible.
