Knowledge is the Beginning is the story of the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, where young Arabs and Jews perform and live side by side. It is a film about what music can do; the way it can transcend cultural barriers, bring people together, defeat prejudice and overcome religious and political differences. It also demonstrates the problems that crop up occasionally and how music can help people from different points of view find common ground. For Daniel Barenboim, founder of the ensemble, the orchestra is a symbol for what could be achieved in the Middle East.

"ידיעה היא ההתחלה דניאל ברנבוים ותזמורת מזרח-מערב" עוקב אחרי פרויקט שהוקם ע"י המנצח הישראלי יחד עם הסופר הפלסטיני המנוח אדוארד סעיד. שיתוף פעולה מוסיקלי ייחודי שמסמל את התקווה לדו-קיום במזרח התיכון. התזמורת מורכבת ממוסיקאים פלסטינאים צעירים בגילאים 14 עד 25 והסרט מתאר את קורותיה משנת 1999 ועד 2004. הסרט משלב, כמובן גם תיעוד של קונצרטים רבים, בישראל, ברשות הפלסטינית וברחבי אירופה.

Este documental narra la inspiradora historia de la West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, creada en 1999 por Daniel Barenboim y Edward Said para reunir a jóvenes músicos de diversas procedencias y posturas políticas en Oriente Medio. A través de ensayos, conciertos y celebraciones, se muestran los desafíos y cómo la música supera prejuicios y construye puentes. Con imágenes únicas de talleres en Weimar y Sevilla, la visita de Barenboim a Ramala y Jerusalén, y momentos destacados de la gira europea de 2005, la película demuestra el poder transformador de la música para encontrar puntos de encuentro en un mundo dividido.
