Superman | Sneak Peek

Excerpt from James Gunn Addresses Why Superman Bleeds In The First Shot Of The DC Reboot’s Trailer - "Not A Fascistic Power Fantasy":

“We do have a battered Superman in the beginning. That is our country. I believe in the goodness of human beings, and I believe that most people in this country, despite their ideological beliefs, their politics, are doing their best to get by and be good people — despite what it may seem like to the other side, no matter what that other side might be. This movie is about that. It’s about the basic kindness of human beings, and that it can be seen as uncool and under siege [by] some of the darker voices or some of the louder voices.”

"Recently, you've come under a lot of fire for what one might..."

"I know it's a lot of fire."

"It's, it's a lot."

"Today the Secretary of Defense said he was going to look into your actions."

"My actions? I stopped a war."

"Maybe."

"Uh, not maybe. I did."

"In effect you illegaly entered a country."

"Did you consult with the president?"

"No."

"You seemingly acting as a representative of the United States will cause more problems around the world."

"I wasn't representing anybody... except for me... and, and, and doing good."

"I would question myself in the same situation and consider the consequences."

"People were going to die!"

Side note:

... O Superman! Where are You When We Really Need You?

notes Laurie Anderson - "O Superman" (Official Music Video) notes

People (myself included) shouldn't generally judge movies based on trailers, but from the trailer it doesn't really seem very good. Is it going to be better than "Superman returns" or "Justice League", yeah, most likely, but I'm going to be surprised if it even manages to be on the same level as "Man of Steel" and I think that was a 7/10 movie.

The combination of James Gunn and the knowledge that they're not rehashing Superman's origin for the umpteenth time has me interested. I enjoyed Zach Snyder's super-serious take and think it might be nice to have a more lighthearted version of the Superman story.

Apparently the world does want/need another Superman...

"Superman just set a Rotten Tomatoes audience score record"

The article title is kinda clickbaity, since the "record" they're talking about is highest RT audience score of a live action Superman movie (not exactly a Guinness Book category), but a 95% audience score is pretty impressive regardless. Opening weekend is on track to make $200M according to Forbes.

I won't be seeing this, but I hope audiences enjoy it. I'm closer to the original Christopher Reeves Superman generation and I loved it as a kid, so I hope the next generation has their fun too.

For real, come Halloween I'm gonna ask all the Supermans which version they are. The Christopher Reeves will get Toberlone. The Corenswets will get a pack of expired ramen noodles.

Of course the George Reeveses will get.... uh... a bottle of Ensure? (surprised none of them called me out for calling Christopher the 'original' 😬)

So what will the others get? Here is W2W's list (minus the ones you already listed):

Kirk Alyn (1948–1950)

Dean Cain (1993–1997)

Tom Welling (2001-2011)

Brandon Routh (2006)

Henry Cavill (2013-2022)

Tyler Hoechlin (2016-2024)

Hmm… to make it easy, all the non-Reeve Supermans will get a DVD of Superman (1978) 😉

I was going to see it anyway, mainly out of curiosity, but as it's enraged certain sections of the US populace helping it to make bank seems like a bonus.

The White House seems to think we need a Superman, though i think the are using a different definition of "super". https://c.ndtvimg.com/2025-07/afd79sic_donald-trump-superman_625x300_12_July_25.jpeg

Any movie that pisses off MAGA is usually good. Hm this changes everything.

As for the WH meme... Sorry all I see is a guy rising from the flames of hell? ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I grew up with Christopher Reeve. But Cavill brought an edge to Superman that reminded us how much he was not like us and could have been a real problem for us. I'd never seen Superman like this until this — Superman vs. Justice League scene. To be honest, I'm not deeply steeped in Superman lore, the comics, backstory, etc. so I have no informed opinion as to whether this is untrue to who Superman is but, as a standalone scene, it blew me away!

DRDMovieMusings--

I've never seen Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021).

But having watched the scene you've shared, I can tell you that though there is mistrust of Superman portrayed in Superman (2025), there is no scene equally as dark or foreboding; the 2025 film (I almost wrote "project", but that means something completely different!) leans more into the comedy. Although it does have its dramatic moments.

Just FYI, I have seen Batman vs Superman (2016), and I liked Henry Cavill in that. But Bat vs. Super was also a much more "serious" film, whereas Superman 2025 (also with a different actor, of course) is not.
