Best Movies About The Afterlife

Movies depicting intriguing ideas of what happens to people after they die. Mind you, I'm talking about concepts dealing with worlds following the known world—not films involving decomposition, zombies, biological certainties, etc. This list is about world-building or even world-altering (i.e., Beetlejuice) scripts that deserve a look for the ideas proposed. Even if you don't think the film did the world-building justice (i.e., What Dreams May Come), you may find the concepts interesting.

Please feel free to add to the list, as I'm trying to keep track of them all. Anime enthusiasts are welcome here, too.

Defending Your Life: El Cielo... próximamente Perhaps the funniest and most romantic of afterlife movies depicting the filtering of souls and next destinations.
Movie
March 22, 1991

Beetlejuice, el Superfantasma One of Tim Burton's best movies. And no Johnny Depp in sight! I seriously want to own The Handbook For The Recently Deceased, even if it does read like stereo instructions. Write the book, Burton!
Movie
March 30, 1988

Wristcutters: A Love Story Romance, suicide, overdoses, cult figures, and a car with a hole in the floor that banishes your loose change to another dimension. In this bleak afterlife landscape, love and friendship is as precious and limited as it was in life.
Movie
October 19, 2007

Ghost: La Sombra del Amor So, there's a point in the movie where you want to tell Sam (Patrick Swayze), "Shoo! Off you go to heaven now. Head into the lights." But you take it all back a few minutes later, and you may even have wished for a sequel, even though that would have been a terrible idea. Probably. Right? Well, I still love this movie. It stays on the top side of the list until the day it doesn't leave me wrecked when the credits roll.
Movie
July 13, 1990
