The Animatrix (アニマトリックス animatorikkusu?) is a 2003 direct-to-video anthology film based on The Matrix trilogy. The film is a compilation of nine animated short films. It details upon the backstory of the "Matrix" universe, and the original war between man and machines which led to the creation of the Matrix.
Based on my own opinion and from Wikipedia, the films happen in the same fictional universe, but they are a different film series, therefore two separate collections. I think it is analogous to Star Trek: Enterprise and Star Trek: TOS; same universe, but different series.
I have not seen it. It is promoted as a complimentary documentary to and about the Matrix, and sold alongside the DVD in some box sets. Is it really part of the film series/collection as we have defined it, or is it just a documentary about the films? Because there are a lot of documentaries about films that we are not considering part of a film's collection (LoTR documentary, Star Trek documentary, Friday the 13th documentary, etc). Based on the guideline thread I don't see it fitting into the collection, unless you want to add exceptions for documentaries about the film series.
I've got them all. The Animatrix (2003) is indeed a compilation of nine animated short films, as stated above.
The Matrix Revisited (2001) is a compilation of short documentaries and behind-the-scenes shorts. It is not a feature-length documentary.
In my opinion, The Matrix Collection should have only the 3 feature films: The Matrix (1999), The Matrix Reloaded (2003), The Matrix Revolutions (2003).

That page also seems to suggest that The Animatrix and The Matrix Revisited are not part of the three film series.
