女番長刑事II 少女鐵假面傳說’是女番長刑事系列的顛峰之作，它為該系列帶來了不可動搖的人氣，至今仍是Fans公認的完成度最高的作品。

以原作漫畫第2部為基礎改編，從『女番長刑事II 少女鐵假面傳說』開始，「麻宮紗紀」作為代號（code name）沿用，代代相傳，女番長刑事的擔當者都要 繼承這個名字，所以女番長刑事的三大特徵：水手服（黑色冬裝&白色夏裝）、用來戰鬥的重合金溜溜球、「麻宮紗紀」這個名字。 另外，主角用土佐腔說的「おまんら、許さんぜよ」（意為「你們這些傢伙，不可原諒！」原文是土佐方言。）等決斷台詞也相當有名。 原作者和田慎二評價這部作品說紗紀「孤獨、為他人而戰、跟敵人戰鬥、與朋友相識」等部分和原作的意象最為接近。

　　相對於初代女番長刑事孤軍奮戰，二代有兩位可靠的戰友與之並肩作戰（這套路在III裡面以三姐妹的形式被沿用）。 打鬥場面的激烈程度也大為升級，戰鬥部分非常精彩。 前作無可比擬的是，作登場的敵人多是個性獨特的角色，十個人十個樣，而非傳統的千人一面的惡役，令人耳目一新。 伏線、謎團以及相應的解答也安排得很出色（當然bug也不少）。 另外，還有當時人氣絕頂的「おニャン子クラブ」（小貓隊，日本80年代後期紅極一時的偶像組合）客串出演。

擔任主演的南野陽子更是憑藉這部作品以及隨後的電影版從而開始了她的事業顛峰期：1985～1986年主演電視劇‘女番長刑事II’、1987年主演電影‘女番長刑事’、 1988年她與工藤靜香、中山美穗、淺香唯共同被稱為“偶像四天王”，人氣盛極一時。
