I'm 60 something. I'm fairly discriminating about movies I will watch and care for. The first movie to make an impression in my childhood was Alfred Hitchcock's 'The Man Who Knew Too Much', a thriller of course. Another of his political themed efforts. Actually my mother took me to see it. I imagine the first movie most people see and like does influence their aesthetic. Thus I have mostly been subject oriented. I like films about identity, for example 'Five Easy Pieces' and recently the Noah Buschel film 'The Missing Person'. I've always been interested in outer space, the ET question and movies about the paranormal. And like most these are the movies I 'like'. Sometimes the actors are an indication about the movie, more often not. An example, I'd be interested in something Viggo Mortensen is in, or Noomi Rapace. And of course the director is often the most important indicator. I'd see anything by David Cronenberg for example. It is not easy to be objective. In cinema I think a good barometer is whether or not the movie achieved it's goal. I daresay one needs to know more about movie making than whether or not they liked a movie to be a good critic. I always enjoyed Roger Ebert's reviews and he attempted to be objective, as a good film critic should.
