In the first volume of the .hack//Liminality series, a Japanese school girl Mai Minase and her friend Tomonari Kasumi became unconscious from playing an online computer game and was rushed to the hospital. Fortunately, Mai Minase regained consciousness, but Tomonari remains in a comatose state. Later after the incident, Mai is one day on her way to school until she ran into a man named Junichiro Tokuoka who claims to know what caused her friend Tomonari to be in a coma. At that time, Mai doesn't know or believes him. Later, Mai had no choice but to believe Tokuoka and tries to find out how the popular online game, "The World" did this to Tomonari. Can Mai and Tokuoka find out clues about "The World" and wake Tomonari Kasumi up out of his coma?

People are desparately trying to escape and Yuki tries to get out as well. Suddenly, a mysterious woman who claims that she happens to work at the school theater helps Yuki find the way out of the theater. Can Yuki escape from the black out crisis and join up with Junichiro Tokuoka to get the answers about "The World"?

Upon arriving in Helba's realm – Net Slum – the group is forced to defend Subaru from an attack by Morganna.

As the battle intensifies, the group seeks shelter in the Cathedral. Morganna summons Guardians to do her bidding.

Drawing strength from Subaru, Tsukasa summons the courage to awaken Aura. Outside of The World, players share a true life encounter.

In the third volume of the .hack//Liminality series, Junichiro Tokuoka travels to Tokyo, Japan to talk with a girl named Kyoko Tohno about the mysteries of "The World", an online computer game that put some people in a comatose state. At the same time, Kyoko has received a strange cell phone e-mail from Helba. They continue to discuss and are trying to get clues about everything related to "The World". They later meet a mysterious man named Sato Ichiro and speak with him to get answers. Will Tokuoka and the three girls Mai, Yuki, and Kyoko that he cooperates with be able to find the mysteries and clues of "The World" and save the comatose victims?

After winning a contest, twins Shugo and Rena enter The World as legendary hacker characters. Shugo is defeated by an unexpectedly powerful monster, which leads to his resurrection by a mysterious woman.

Balmung decides to throw an event to make cherry blossom trees bloom, which Shugo, Rena, and their new sidekick Mireille decide to attend. After a monster appears, Shugo must rely on a furry friend for help in battle.

Shugo levels up by letting the members in his party do all the work. Next, he helps another player whose sick grunty can only be cured with an item located in a dangerous part of The World.

Sanjuro begins to train Shugo, and Rena is selected as the damsel in distress in an event that can make wishes come true.

Rena falls into a trap that was intended for Shugo. Her disappearance leaves the group wondering where she’s gone.

The search for Rena begins. A mysterious message leads the search party to a dangerous location. The party is caught off guard by heartbreaking news.

Rena remains in a comatose state and is unable to log out of The World. Balmung reveals that several other users have been affected in a similar way.

Balmung has his role as an administrator taken away, and Rena attempts to contact Shugo with the help of Aura.

Shugo uses a new ability to try and reach Rena. The two are almost united, but a rogue AI complicates the situation.

Shugo continues his training with the group, and their teamwork is tested by the appearance of a new monster.

After fending off a dangerous wave of attacks, the group learns of Aura’s plan to maintain the balance of The World through the use of unconventional methods.

A virus prevents the party from achieving victory in battle. With data drain left as the only option, Shugo must use his abilities like never before to save Rena.

Two years before Tsukasa's arrival in The World, Mimiru encounters a mysterious character that helps her learn an important lesson about the game.

In the final volume of the .hack//Liminality series, it is several weeks after the meeting in Hida-Takayama on Christmas Eve and Junichiro Tokuoka, Kyoko Tohno, Yuki Aihara, and Mai Minase all gather on a dinner boat in Tokyo Bay to prepare for their risky (and most certainly illegal) mission. Despite their nervousness, each one is dedicated to helping Ichiro Sato complete the mission sent from Helba. Ichiro himself soon arrives on a different boat. While traveling to their destination, Ichiro reveals the true nature of the problems that have been plaguing The World. Harald Hoerwick's program, Fragment, had been nothing more than a program to create an "Ultimate AI". The system to create this A.I. had somehow become self autonomous, and was working to delay the birth of the A.I. known as Aura, to keep itself from finishing its purpose and ceasing to exist. If the problems are to be solved, the Ultimate A.I. must be born, and it's up to Tokuoka and his team to help that event occur.

It's a short story about the characters from .hack// Legend of the Twilight meeting offline. It's more to hear than to see. It shows only backgrounds from the real world with the heads of the charater-game-avatars; but it reveals some interesting real life informations about the characters.

Tsukasa makes her first return to The World for a festive party hosted by Helba. Later, Subaru dances the night away, and Aura looks down from above.

Helba has prepared a special hot springs for the .hack characters so they could get some rest and relaxation. Kite, Elk, Tsukasa, Mimiru and many other characters from the series make an appearence in The World for this reward. There is only one small catch, Helba will not reveal the exact location of where the springs are located. It soon becomes a race between the cast of .hack//SIGN and the characters from the game to see who can find it first. However, this is a catch, while everyone is trying to find the springs, someone is going around killing the other charcaters. Who will make it to the springs first and who is behind the deaths of many of the other characters?

Haseo's entrance into The World is marked by a hostile attack – and a crushing defeat. His adventure appears to be over before it started until a mysterious stranger gives him new life.

His search for information about his mysterious savior leads to an invitation for Haseo to join Ovan’s guild.

Rumors being spread about Haseo lead to attacks against him. Invitations to join two separate guilds intrigue him, but an encounter with Shino will influence his choice.

Haseo embarks on a journey through the game on a quest to level up, Sakisaka grows suspicious, and Tabby meets an untimely end.

Haseo is suspected of acting as a spy, putting him at odds with the Twilight Bridgade. His actions after the falling out only serve to further implicate him.

Concerns over Sakisaka’s loyalty arise, The World experiences technical difficulties, and Haseo unveils a few new tricks.

Strange occurrences plague The World as Haseo wanders the Lost Grounds. Later, a group exploration leads to shocking new knowledge and a sudden disappearance!

The group stumbles upon a portal, Haseo shares an encounter with Ender, and more is learned about the virus cores.

While attempting to collect all the Virus Cores, the Twilight Brigade is attacked by adversaries – and relocated to a mysterious, unknown area.

Ovan wanders into a trap while searching for the Key of Twilight. Shino, in an attempt to secure Ovan’s release, makes a bold threat!

Gord gives serious thought to leaving The World for good, and the administrators take serious action against some online outlaws.

The Twilight Brigade is forcibly disbanded, Gord finally arrives at a decision regarding his involvement in The World, and Haseo makes a vow to Shino.

Tabby has some shocking news for Haseo, and Shino’s precious data beings to disappear.

Haseo is devastated about his inability to prevent Shino from falling into a comatose state. Tabby has plans for a new guild, but its lack of members is troubling.

Tabby encounters two players who are new to The World. Later, she learns the secrets to leveling up, and Haseo embarks on a quest for revenge.

Phyllo attempts to comfort Haseo, who continues to agonize over his comatose friend. A dangerous new quest – and the promise of newfound power – tempts Haseo.

Tabby’s been worried about Haseo since his departure to the Forest of Pain. She expresses her concern to Subaro, who is instructed by Pi to follow Haseo into the forest. Meanwhile, Yata and Pi prod Phyllo for information about his relationship with Ovan.

Tabby is still struggling with her inability to help Haseo in the Forest of Pain. In the forest, Haseo grows frustrated with the ever-growing amount of monsters he must fight before going deeper, but his quest for more power may be his downfall.

Tawaraya returns unde the moniker “Tohta” to discover a gang of money traders has been flooding the market, creating high inflation. Despite his quest for secrecy, Tohta can’t stand back and let the money traders fleece innocent players, and decides to intervene.

As Haseo’s search for information about Tri-Edge continues, his sanity begins to slip away, and in a murderous rage he kills several PKs. Yata and Pi are still on the hunt for Haseo’s factor. They send Subaro to retrieve it, but she can’t overcome Haseo’s manic strength.

A mysterious new player, Midori, has started a “hit-me-if-you-can” service. Haseo, still in the grips of manic power, enlists her services in order to discover Tri-Edge’s whereabouts. Meanwhile, Tohka encourages Tabby to start her own guild.

Tabby starts a new healing guild, but so far they haven’t had much success. Tohka points out that their levels are way to low to help anyone, and demands they go out and raise them. Haseo finally makes an appearance in town, and Phyllo warns him about the dangers of being single-minded.

Haseo, consumed by a violent mania, will stop at nothing to find Tri-Edge, even it if means slaughtering any Player Killer who steps in his way. But while on his murderous rampage he’s left behind a trail of PK enemies who band together to stop him.

After brutally slaughtering all the PKers, Haseo earns the nickname “The Terror of Death.” Still in the grips of insanity, Haseo refuses help or warnings from his old guild. But when Haseo finally encounters Tri-Edge, will he able to carry out his plan?

There’s been no sign of Haseo for several days now, and rumors swirl that he’s quit for good. In his absence, Tabby has a realization, and also discovers a new love interest! Meanwhile, Phyllo divulges something shocking to Tohta.

Haseo reappears after his hiatus only to receive devastating news about Phyllo. Tabby finally discovers the confidence to make her own decisions, and informs Haseo she has decided to become a nurse in order to save Shino. Now, Haseo is alone with only his memories to keep him company.

The characters from previous .hack//G.U. Games and .hack//Roots receive an email from Ovan. He is requesting them to go to Hidden Forbidden Festival where is set up a mysterious summer festival. There they find an AIDA Chim Chim who wishes to peacefully co-exist with the other players of The World. It then transforms into the word "Returner", so they assume it to mean that Ovan will return to The World.
