In the UK, it was the right wing Conservative party who decimated "working men's" jobs in manufacturing etc as the unions were seen as too powerful. They deliberately shifted the UK to a service/financial based (white collar) economy. They also love Uber and other such "self employed" employers as it means that people who aren't actually properly employed don't show as unemployed.

The concept behind Uber (just short term hire a car and driver when you need one) makes intellectual sense as most cars aren't driven that much. Unfortunately it would need a seismic shift in working practices to work as a replacement for car ownership as most cars also tend to be needed at the same time: at the start and end of the working day. For non-commuting use I guess when autonomous cars are widespread it might work better, but even then it would only work well if there was a nationalised industry as if there are too many operators it all gets too complex.

As for the cost of labour, why shouldn't someone who works a full time job be able to support a (standard size) family? Even when they mess up they seem to be let go with a multi-million severance package!
