The July 15th incident was very vague.

Seemed very vague with not a lot of explanation as to what happened, what the audience got was the after effects and learning the death of Turner's Daughter. It would have been a lot better if they provided some detail about the incident which would have added to the death of his daughter, it would have helped to better understand Turner's motivation towards Mutants.

I think the Brotherhood and the X-Men were fighting and one of them accidentally killed a whole lot of people.

That is the impression I got too. I do agree it was not totally clear as to what happened. I believe it will be the story of a few bad mutants being bad, so all mutants are seen as evil or terrorists.
