A 10-month-old labrador needs a hip replacement before it can begin training as a medical-alert dog to help its owner with her rare health condition. An eight-year-old shih-tzu has the most extraordinary walk the vet has ever seen, but the operation to fix the dog's spine will be extremely risky, presenting the owners with an agonising decision.

Noel Fitzpatrick and the team deal with two emergency cases in this edition. Lara the cat went missing after jumping into a removal van, but escaped, only to be hit by a car and then attacked by a fox. One of its rear legs is shattered and the vet has to perform reconstructive surgery to rebuild it. Chief, an eight-year-old Northern Inuit, dislocated its hip while chasing a fox. Noel thinks it needs hip-replacement surgery, but owner Nigel can't afford to pay for the operation.
