Debate Unforgotten

As good as she was (and always is), IMO this season hasn't suffered from the loss of Nicola Walker, fortunately. Sanjeev Bhaskar and the rest of the crew are just as compelling as ever, thanks in part to the quality writing. I'm really enjoying how the several and seemingly disparate story lines that were introduced at the start are beginning to merge, and in such excellent fashion. So far the personal problems of Sunny and Jess aren't overpowering the intriguing and very weird crime at the heart of it all.

And speaking of personal problems of the new guv, why do I suspect Jess' husband may have been boinking her sister?!?!? I could be dead wrong but the phone conversation between the two sisters in Ep. 3, while brief, seemed to have a telling undercurrent.

Which of the three series are you following that the new seasons of premiered on Masterpiece last night? I probably will again follow only World on Fire.

genplant, I'm not perfectly clear about the Jay Royce situation either. All I know is this: he was the younger brother (by a different father) of Joseph Bell, whose father was the cult leader in Wales. I think Jay Royce, knowing Joe had been murdered, assumed his identity later on just to obfuscate his criminal record in the name of Jay Royce, although his brother had a criminal record as well. But I'm not absolutely sure why he assumed his dead brothers identity. Maybe Wonder2Wonder would have a better grasp of the details.

AND I think the rationale for Jay and Ebele having never met before was for a couple of reasons: first of all, over the many years prior and up until the time of Precious' death, Ebele had a very troubled and somewhat estranged relationship with her daughter anyway, a daughter who stole from her and was the source of much grief and guilt in her life. Recall, Precious blamed her mother for her drug addiction based on the idea that she was born with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Secondly, after having STUFFED PRECIOUS' CORPSE IN THE CHIMNEY she probably wanted to avoid anything to do with her daughter's sordid life. And I imagine Jay, having witnessed his mother shoot Joe in the head and then take her own life right after, likely left the house and scene of the crime ASAP!

I watched Hotel Portofino last night. While it's basically a soap opera, I enjoy the scenery (IIRC it's filmed in and around Dubrovnik, not in Italy). I fell asleep during World On Fire but will try to catch it again.

The information is in S5E5.

Jay's birth was never registered, because his mother Precious didn't want him taken into care like his half-brother Joseph. He lived between his mother and his father, Eric Royce, until he was eleven. His father died in 2015. When he was fourteen his mother died and he lived on the streets of London, working odd jobs in markets and living in squats. After he turned sixteen, he assumed Joseph's identity to gain access to his benefits. He is 21 in the series.

You ARE a wonder W2W! A lot of those details escaped my notice. How very clever of Jay to figure out a way to cash in on his brother's murder. Also, I wondered why Lord Hume, when they were finally face to face, remarked to Jay, "Who are you?". We didn't know at that point that Hume had buried Joe's body, nor did we know yet that Jay wasn't Joe, so no wonder he was puzzled.
