Diskutera Futurama

I'm confused as to why everywhere else I look, the 2023 season of Futurama is referenced as Season 11 but TMDB calls it Season 8? Why is that?

When the series last aired between June 2012 and September 2013, the official broadcaster at the time (Comedy Central) listed those episodes as Season 7 on their website.

When the new season was released in July 2023, Hulu/Disney called it Season 11 and messed with the original season structure.

You'd have to ask Hulu/Disney why they're not following the original data, but TMDB do not retroactively change data after episodes have aired.

TheTVDB and Wikipedia both also correctly list 8 seasons.

Why not leave 1 thru 7 as is and just name season 8 as season 11? Hulu/Disney is now the "official broadcaster" and if they say the 2023 season is season 11, who is TMDB to say it's not?

When TMDB is used as a source of data for a lot of apps that need media naming (like with Plex), it makes things much more confusing IMO.

I don't disagree. I'm not a Moderator though so I'll leave that answer to them.

Having said that, what if Hulu/Disney had reorganised the original season structure by combining seasons instead of splitting them, then named the new episodes Season 7 Episode 1 etc. TMDB couldn't list two S07E01's. That example has happened with other series/networks so I can understand why TMDB simply add the new season as the next available number.

Well, if you follow the "original broadcaster" rule, then you'd be fine. Whatever broadcaster that originates the season is the record of authority IMO.

I don't think it's a very realistic hypothetical to posit that any broadcaster would try to overwrite an existing season though.

It has happened before.

FOX were the original broadcaster of American Dad, they aired (and listed on their website) 11 seasons.

When the series moved to TBS network, they combined certain previous seasons and then listed new episodes as a season and episode number which had already been used by FOX.

I think the episode order on Hulu mostly matches the order we have, it's just that Hulu uses different season splits:

  • Hulu has the four DVD movies as Season 6, with each movie being spit into 4 episodes for a total of 16 additional episodes (this gives Hulu one additional season)
  • Hulu splits the two 26-episode Comedy Central seasons into four 13-episode seasons (this gives Hulu two more additional seasons)

Quoting our rules : "When seasons are re-organized after a network change (e.g. American Dad, Futurama), we do not re-arranged the aired seasons/episodes. The new season is simply added as the next season." which means that the new season should be listed as season 8 after season 7.
