Debate Z Nation

The closing segment of the episode was nuts. Warren, Doc, Dr. Sun Mei, and Murphy finally caught up with The Man and his captive Lucy at the summit of a small mountain. Warren and Doc have guns pointed at The Man who is pointing his gun in their direction.
Now The Man has murdered numerous people in his quest to kidnap either Murphy or his daughter and has made clear his intention to deliver Lucy to his employers who plan to use her for medical tests and procedures against her will.

For some reason Warren decides to lay down her gun and attempt to reason with The Man although she knows his character and his history. She had to know for a certainty that he could not be persuaded to give Lucy up. Warren has had to kill people before and is not squeamish about having to do so.
So why did she lay down her gun and leave the flaky stoned pothead Doc as her backup? Obviously the writers needed a cliffhanger (in the form of several cliff jumpers) and didn't want Lucy rescued by a bullet to The Man's head. It certainly would have been logical and justifiable for Warren to drop him with a head shot, most likely preventing him from returning fire. (An accurate head shot can make the body relax and go limp, making a return shot unlikely). But that would have relieved the tension, and the writers wanted to leave the viewers concerned about Lucy's (and Addie's) safety during the off season (did everybody really die in the end?) so they didn't want such a definite ending to the kidnapping drama. And who knows? Perhaps The Man will experience a change of heart in season 4 and wind up helping to save Lucy, if not becoming an active asset to Lucy and the team in season 4. By the end of this episode he has already begun expressing affection for her and concern for her safety. And he has shown restraint by not killing Addie though he had ample opportunities to do so. He doesn't seem to want to kill people when it is not necessary to the completion of his task, which means he isn't as bad as he might have been.

But when I watched this segment, with The Man standing in the open with no cover, so vulnerable to fire from Doc and Warren, I kept thinking "why don't you just shoot?" It is a very common trope in action dramas to have the main protagonists extend the danger they are in by making tactically unsound, even stupid decisions and actions. Writers know that we viewers are emotionally invested in these characters and they want us "on the edge of our seats". But sometimes they overplay it. But I guess I am used to it and not too bothered by it most of the time. And it wasn't too far out of character for Warren to try to avoid violence, IF she thought it unnecessary. I just thought she would have shot him straight away since she knew there was no chance of talking The Man out of it.
