Of course it was massively different from the books, but it managed to do its own thing and be entertaining and fun. In addition, given the time the series aired, it would have been quite unrealistic to expect SyFy, or any other network, to be willing to provide the budget necessary to accurately adapt the books. It was a few years before HBO came along and threw money at Game of Thrones.
