Why did I automatically get an avatar?

I've used the George Costanza avatar on other sites, but I got it here automatically. How the hell did it know?

If your avatar was already registered on Gravatar.com, this site imports it.
Since recently, Travis made it possible to directly upload an avatar image (instead of using your Gravatar). So if you want to put in a new avatar, go to account settings, click "Details" (under Account) and click the green "Upload Your Own" link.
