After Matthew's screams of terror, Burke and Roger break into the old house rescuing Victoria. They find Matthew dead from fright. Elizabeth, calls the Sheriff. Victoria comes home and states that the ghost of Josette Collins saved her. Roger thinks she is traumatized and imagined the ghost. Roger takes Sheriff Patterson to the Old House. Elizabeth orders Burke not to hurt Carolyn or Victoria, whom she suspects he is attracted to. Burke visits Victoria in her room and she thanks him. Burke tells her to flee Collinwood; she believes she's safe now that Matthew's dead. Roger comes home and tells the news that there will probably be no inquest. Matthew died of a heart attack most likely brought about by a big fright. Victoria feels Josette watched over her the whole time and she believes she resembles Josette. She thinks Josette is one of her ancestors. Meanwhile, Josette's ghost appears outside the Old House and dances around the columns.

Now that Laura is "dead", Elizabeth awakens from her coma and immediately wants to return to Collinwood. Victoria talks to David about his experience, but the only thing he remembers is the fishing shack. Victoria tells him that his mother had to leave town without him. After David leaves, Burke comes into the drawing room with Vickie and shows her Laura's locket, which he found in the ashes of the shack.

Burke and Sam confront Roger, who finally breaks down and confesses he was responsible for killing the man who Burke went to prison for. Jason makes another attempt to get into the locked room in the basement, but David catches him. Victoria and Carolyn start to suspect Jason and think he must have some kind of hold over Elizabeth. Jason tries to get into the locked room again, but Elizabeth catches him. She tells him to leave Collinwood immediately, but Jason points out to her that she killed Paul Stoddard 18 years ago and he helped her bury him.

Elizabeth is disturbed by Willie's disappearence. While she did want him to leave, he did not take any of his belongings or the money Elizabeth offered him with him. Jason, looking for Willie, finds out from the caretaker that Willie had broken into the Collins Mausoleum the night before. At Collinwood, Mrs. Johnson opens the door and finds a man who asks for Elizabeth. Mrs. Johnson goes to tell Elizabeth, but first asks the man's name. He tells her his name is Barnabas Collins - the name of the man in the portrait that is hanging in the foyer at that moment.

Barnabas tells Elizabeth that he is from England, and is the only surviving member of the English branch. When asked, he tells her that he is thinking of possibly settling down in Collinsport. Barnabas visits the Old Hous and finds David Collins playing there. After David leaves the Old House, Barnabas begins to talk to the portrait of Josette Collins.

Carolyn and Victoria are confused by Willie's recent illness and behavior. Carolyn tries to find out what trouble her mother is in. Willie attempts to leave, but Jason stops him. After dark Willie hears the sound of a heartbeat and knows that something is calling him. Jason sees Willie sneak out of the house and follows him to the graveyard. Willie enters the secret room in the Collins Mausoleum, and Jason is unable to find him.

The sheriff tells Roger that animals are being "drained" of blood. Dr. Woodard finds that Willie is suffering from a massive loss of blood.

Barnabas visits the coffee shop and talks with Maggie. Barnabas leaves his cane behind. Joe arrives to pickup Maggie and she notices the cane, they decide to return it to Barnabas. Willie asks Barnabas what his plans are for Maggie, he knows that Barnabas has "plans" for her. Later Maggie feels as if someone is watching her.

Victoria tells Elizabeth that Willie is now working for Barnabas. Elizabeth goes to the Old House to speak to Barnabas and David follows her (against her wishes). David is disturbed by all the changes that have been made to the Old House. Burke asks Elizabeth has sold some land to raise cash, he suspects that Jason McGuire has something to do with it. David goes back to the Old House and is locked in, with the sound of howling dogs outside.

Willie finds out from Victoria that Maggie has disappeared; Later Willie (anonymously) tells Victoria that Maggie can be found at the graveyard on Eagle Hill. Maggie meets Barnabas, however he and Willie are forced to leave her behind when Burke and Victoria arrive and find Maggie. Barnabas and Willie hide in the secret room in the Collins Mausoleum. Barnabas beats Willie for betraying him. After getting Maggie home everyone discovers the fang marks on her neck.

Dr. Woodard examines Maggie again and is still puzzled by her illness. Victoria watches over Maggie. Sam works on Barnabas' portrait and Barnabas steps out for some night air. Maggie becomes agitated and wants Victoria to leave. Victoria goes to call for help, the door slams behind her and the sound of vicious dogs can be heard.

Maggie is found unconscious and the wounds on her neck have been re-opened. Dr. Woodard moves Maggie to the hospital. The nurse watches over Maggie as she sleeps, Maggie appears to get worse, the nurse examines her then goes to get the doctor. When they both return Maggie is gone and the window is wide open. The nurse tells Dr. Woodard that there was every indication that Maggie was dead.

Dr. Woodard is puzzled by what he finds in samples of Maggie's blood. Roger suspects Elizabeth is paying money to Jason because he has something on her. Elizabeth tells Jason she cannot give him any more money as it is starting to attract attention; Jason agrees. Someone breaks into Dr. Woodard's office and steals the samples of Maggie's blood.

Jason's body lays dead in the floor in the Old House's basement. Willie comes down and sees the body. As he grieves for Jason, Barnabas asks him why. Willie tells him that even though Jason threatened to kill him, the two of them were always friends. Barnabas and Willie carry Jason out of the house and take him to the secret room in the mausoleum. Though Barnabas hates to dishonor his family with McGuire's presence, he and Willie bury him under the concrete floor. Meanwhile, Maggie is able to remember Sarah from a sketch that he father made. Later, Sarah appears at the mausoleum.

Carolyn is in the drawing room, and is looking out the window. David enters. They talk, and he gasps. He says he saw an old man standing outside the window. Elizabeth enters. David tells Elizabeth what he saw, and leaves. Elizabeth talks to Carolyn, and tells Carolyn that she thinks David is mentally disturbed and she has no choice but to send him away. He tells Carolyn that he made everything up, and makes Carolyn promise she will not go to the Old House. David leaves and Carolyn decides to go to the Old House. Carolyn encourages her to go, and Vickie says she might go later. Julia enters the house, coming back from town. Carolyn says it's a strange conicendence that Vickie had a dream like that. Julia feels that Carolyn suspects her of something. On the terrace, Carolyn watchs the sun sets. She thinks she hears Barnabas calling for her, but it is just Joe Haskell. She tells him that she no longer believes the things David has been saying. Julia and Carolyn are in the same room. Julia asks Carolyn not to follow her around so much, and then leaves the room. Roger and Elizabeth tell Carolyn that Vickie and David will soon be leaving for Boston for a few days of vacation. Carolyn says she is pleased that David is getting away, which surprises Elizabeth. Roger offers Carolyn the chance to go with Vickie and David, but she declines. Carolyn leaves. Roger and Elizabeth talk about Carolyn's recent strange behavior. Later, Vickie is making a bouqet of flowers when Julia enters. Vickie tells Julia it is for Barnabas and tells her about her behavior to him earlier. Carolyn enters and says she is going shopping for a few hours. After Carolyn leaves, Julia closes the door, but Carolyn listens to their conversation from the other side of the door. Despite everything that has happened, Barnabas re-iterates to Angelique that he is still in love with Josette and ONLY Josette. So, Angelique secretly plans to make Barnabas suffer by using his little sister, Sarah, to hurt him.

Angelique begins her assault by stealing Sarah's doll and inserting pins into it, causing Sarah to become very ill. The Collins family and their doctor are at a loss as to what is causing her illness and fear that she is on the brink of death. Angelique casually mentions to Barnabas that she heard of a similar incident back on the island of Martinique and that a special tea was brewed to heal the infirmed. Desperate to help his beloved little sister, Barnabas promises to marry Angelique IF she can cure Sarah. Angelique then brews the special tea and as Sarah drinks it, Angelique removes the pins from Sarah's doll, ""curing"" Sarah instantly.

Barnabas bribes one of the servents and enters the New House at Collinwood to interogate Ben. Ben says he doesn't know who the witch is. Ben gets frustrated and hits Barnabas over the head with a bottle. Ben escapes Collinwood. Barnabas is found by a servent and Joshua tells him to leave. Barnabas finds out that Victoria has been jailed after Reverand Trask turned her in. He now believes that Angelique is most likely the witch. Barnabas finds where Ben is hiding and finds out that Ben can not tell Barnabas who is the witch because he can not speak her name in that fashion. Barnabas tells her about how Victoria will be killed for witchcraft. Barnabas then tells Ben to write the first letter of the name of the witch. Ben makes a 'V'...Barnabas says ""V for Victoria"". Ben then makes a mark in the V which makes it an A. Barnabas then says, ""A....for Angelique""

Angelique tries to clean her blood off the carpet, but is not able to remove it. Naomi comes to the Old House to see Barnabas. Angelique tells her that he left last night on business. We see Barnabas upstairs, appearing very ill and delirious. Naomi enquires about the blood stain, and is told that it was from wine. Naomi tells Angelique that she should stay with her at Collinwood, but Angelique refuses Naomi's hospitality. Naomi hears Barnabas moan, but is told by Angelique that it is just the stairs.
Back at Collinwood, Naomi is worried. She talks to Joshua, and Joshua tells her that he is not concerned because he has become more independent in the past. Joshua thinks that Barnabas ran off with Josette. At that moment, Josette and Natalie enter the room. Josette tells of the feelings she has that something bad has happened to her Barnabas. Naomi tells her that Barnabas is not in Collinsport, but Josette does not believe her. She and Natalie decide to go to the Old House

Angelique tells Josette and Natalie that Barnabas has the plague. They ask if he has seen a doctor, and she quickly responds that he hasn't. When asked why, Angelique says that she is afraid that they will take Barnabas away from her and isolate her from everyone. Natalie has a doctor come. He is not sure about it, but agrees that it is most likely the plague due to the marks on Barnabas' neck, which the doctor thinks was caused by an infected rat. At first the doctor wants to have him removed, but Natalie talks him out of it. Josette visits Victoria in jail. Josette pleads with her to cure Barnabas. Victoria again and again tells her that she is not the witch. Victoria tells Josette to leave Collinsport for her safety. Josette does not understand, and Victoria tells her to look in the Collins Family History book that Victoria had brought with her from the past. Josette and Natalie search Victoria's room. Willie brings Adam some food to eat. Julia tells Willie to expect this behavior from Adam, after all he feels dejected. Willie tells Julia that he would rather return to Wyndcliffe then continue to live like this, but Julia tells him if he returns to Wyndcliffe he won't ever get out. Willie finds out that he likes shiny things, so he opens a secret door and takes out some jewelry, formally owned by Josette Collins, out of the compartment. Willie tells Adam about the time Maggie was in the Old House and thought she was Josette Collins. He puts the jewlery back, and decides to leave to give Maggie a pair of earrings. Julia enters the Old House and finds Willie, seemingly in a trance-like state. She goes to him, and he says he was afraid it would be Carolyn. Julia finds that Willie has had the dream. Julia tells Willie that if the dream curse isn't stopped, someone will die--Barnabas. Willie tells Julia the dream, and he acts as if he's crazy. Julia offers to erase his memory of the dream, which he gladly accepts. While hypnotizing him, Willie says he sees a vision of Carolyn--underground! In the root cellar, Carolyn wakes up. She tries to get out but can not due to the rock. At Collinwood, Elizabeth and Vickie sit in the drawing room. Elizabeth tells Vickie that the person on the phone was the sheriff--Adam has been caught. Elizabeth decides to go to town to question Adam, and Vickie volunteers to go with her. Carolyn muses over things, and decides Adam must've left to get food since that was the only word she said that he fully understood. Meanwhile, at the jail, Adam sits in his cell, frustrated.
