Actually he wore a TOS uniform to the movie, and with Spock ears too. Wheaton was on TNG, and there wasn't a Spock either.

As usual you have sharp eyes for the details. He must have been going for a general Trekkie look, instead of a "Look at me I was on TNG".

Yes, a TOS uniform is likely far more recognizable.

But it doesn't take very sharp eyes. The uniform styles were pretty different.
