I thought I would hate it and I was right. There just isn't enough material for humor present in Sheldon's childhood to make a show about it and it be funny. This feels more like a drama posing as a comedy. I don't think it will last more than a season.
And yeah, I'm coming to this conclusion off the pilot. Honestly ,I can't imagine how this got green lit.

I actually watched it on TV while watching another show on my Tablet and Game of Thrones on my phone.
Now I have to rewatch it to see if I like it.
BTW it's your fault I'm addicted to GOT.

It may be too much to expect this kind of accuracy, but I thought Sheldon's father was smarter and more insightful etc, than he was said to be in various BBT episodes. Maybe that's because if he was as much of a drunken dullard as grown-up Sheldon said he was, the show would be even more unwatchable.

I did not think that it was bad. In fact, if it were a “stand alone” show rather than based on a character from a long-standing, well-loved show, I think it would have a greater chance for success. People’s expectations will be very different as a result of already knowing grown up Sheldon. I will continue to watch it, at least for a while, but do not anticipate it running more than 1-2 seasons. That may be all that is needed, though, to fulfill the curiosity of those who wanted a peek into his childhood.
I think for me the only negative thought that came up during the show was that I kind of liked having my own mental picture of what he was like as a kid, and this show was basically saying, “this is how it was”. I didn’t anticipate having that thought.

That's a risk with the original show too, of course. Because so often they write things are so totally out of character - or go against what has been shown in other episodes - just to get to a particular joke.

Too much like The Goldbergs. Also, I didn't like the way the parents let the kids act like total brats at the dinner table. I thought Sheldon's family would be more strict than that.

I think one thing to keep in mind is that the story is being told from Sheldon's point of view (at the least the scenes he is in), since older Sheldon is narrating it. Therefore what we see of his brother and sister's behavior will be his perception of it- and perhaps sometimes exaggerated.

Here's the bottom line, I laughed one time in 30 minutes. That' s not good enough.
Other things - why in the hell did CBS debut it tonight, but it's not airing again until NOVEMBER? Who's running that network? That makes ZERO sense.
Also, if there was ever a show that needed a laugh track, it's YOUNG SHELDON.
It felt awkward, and forced. And a nearly 90 year old Bob Newhart with dyed hair was absurd. He looked like a Walker from TWD.

What I expected but not too bad but then not that compelling either. I for one am sick of Sheldon big or little. First scene that made me groan was the arriving to high school and the shots of every high school clique hanging out in packs, a scene from so many high school movies like he goes to "high school movie high school". And all of his teachers hate him on the first day ? Another problem is that there are too many characters that each will have a line or two to develop them over the season.
Jim Parsons narrating reminded me of "Stand by Me". "Stand by Sheldon"?
I did hear an interview with Jim Parsons and the way the show came be is that he was trying to get a show together based on his nephew or some young relative. He called up Chuck Lorre for advise and he said why not use Sheldon's youth as a subject since there is already material and characters ready to work with.

wow so many haters I watched it with my oldest grandson hes 18 and we laughed all the way through it maybe this series isn't for fanatics of tbbt ,the little boy playing Sheldon was very good and the little girl who plays the sister was great. This wasn't tbbt and if you are afraid its going to somehow shatter how you think about Sheldon then don't watch, me I just look at it as a stand alone series and really hope it stays on the air.

You are right here. There are two different audiences that will be attracted to YS and they will both approach it differently. I wonder what people who may not be familiar with Sheldon from TBBT thought of it ?

That's a point, but in that case shouldn't his father be the kind of drunken dullard Sheldon always described him as being?

Perhaps what we saw last night was just the beginning of his drinking. I'm trying to remember- how old was Sheldon supposedly when his father died? And how old was Sheldon supposed to be last night? Anyone remember?

I think he was supposed to be 9 at the start of the series. Sheldon has said he was 14 when his father died. But even if he started drinking a lot, I don't see the guy we saw becoming such a dullard. If we're supposed to believe Sheldon's father did those things, I think they picked the wrong actor to play him.

Guess it depends on what you mean by dullard. His dad wasn't made out to be any Einstein last night, and heavy drinking can dull what mind you have even more. Anyway, I can see the stories fitting together.

No Einstein, sure. But I just don't picture that guy even getting drunk enough to pick a fight with a cactus.
And not that it really happened, even, but like you said, if we're seeing things as Sheldon remembered them, not necessarily as they really happened, then his dad has to pick a fight with a cactus. Because Sheldon told Leonard it happened.
