I can't find it now, but someone on one of these threads commented that the original Constitution class starship, the USS Constitution, was NCC-1700. Which then gets the Enterprise as 1701, etc...

And yet, in "The Doomsday Machine," the Constellation is NCC-1017.

Anyone care to take a stab at a likely-unbelievable retcon explanation?
