I watched the pilot episode a couple of days ago. I liked it. I thought the plot was good, exploring the law of unintended circumstances (that when Discovery entered the wormhole to go to future to save the Galaxy from Control, they unintentionally enabled a pre-warp capality planet to create a "warp bomb" that if it had of been used in that planet's civil war, it would pretty much destroyed everything). I also LOVED the scene where Pike was watching The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) when he was making breakfast. The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951) is one of my favorite movies of all time! I love Michael Rennie (especially his voice, what a gorgeous voice and English accent that man had!).

I don't think anyone could give me a credible explanation for how observing Discovery leads to developing any kind of warp technology.

I know, but I got the feeling that when Number One said that about the warp bomb, the writers of the episode felt that the audience would probably assume that the dominant faction on that planet had scientists who were able to "reverse technology" and that's how that planet developed the "warp bomb", instead of the reading of warp capability starships that Starfleet picked up.

I'm sure that's what the writers felt, but it's still BS claptrap nonsense.

@Knixon: As I said before, the plot of this episode got confusing at the half-way point, but other than that I really liked it. It was especially interesting that Kirk's older brother George "Sam"was assigned to the Enterprise. I also liked the scene where we got Spock and T'Pring together,and the first sign to the audience that she doesn't like the Federation or Starfleet.

Shouldn't Sam be at home with his wife and infant son ???

I don't think Sam has even gotten married yet.

I know! When it was announced that Kirk's older brother would be on Strange New Worlds I thought "wait a minute, wasn't George a biologist on Deneva? WTH is he doing on the Enterprise?" But when Pike had him come up to the bridge, George mentioned that he was a Lieutenant in the Life Sciences division. So because of the timeline between Pike and Kirk's Captainacies, George could have very well been a Lieutenant on the Enterprise before he goes to Deneva Colony with his family.

But judging from the age of his son during Operation Annihilate he must have an infant son around the time of Pike
