Hello everyone,
It's finally time to take a look at the genres we use and make some tweaks. This post might get a little lengthy but I'll try to cover what I know right now.
First, here's a list of the movie genres on TMDb:
TMDb
And if we wanted to compare this list to some other sources online...
Rotten Tomatoes
IMDb
Amazon
Onbviously, one of the things you might notice is that there are actually other genres in use on TMDb, but are not located in the above list. This is part of what we need to look at.
My initial proposal for TMDb's new set of genres is going to be the following:
Do you guys have anything else you think deserves to be on this list?

I agree with hill89. I refer the issue to the administrators of "TheMovie Database". In Spanish it would be "Musical" genre.

Why "short" should not be included?
Because the genre is something you set looking at the content of the film. You place a film in the "short" genre looking at its running time. And you still don't have all information because you'd have to set a line separating "short" and "non-short". Where? 15 minutes? 45 minutes? Besides, a "short" film has a "real" genre like "comedy" or "science-fiction". You can always filter by "running time < X". If you have "short" as a genre perhaps you should consider "long" for Hindi films, typically exceeding 150 minutes.
About primary genre or subgenre... in my personal database I store up to 3 genres for each film. You can say the film "participates" from those genres. So you can have crime/comedy, horror/musical or drama/romance/musical.
The same reasoning can be applied to "TV movie" or "animation". A TV movie is a "drama" or "romance" or whatever and the same for "animation". In my vision those are not genres. They are simply data in the same category as "color/B&W". A film is "real image" or "animation" and perhaps "mixed" like Who Framed Roger Rabbit. The same way you don't say "color films" is a genre you can't say "animation" is. The animated film will be "romance" or "science-fiction" or whatever.

I totally agree with Hector. The length of a film material should not be used as a way of classification.

Re Hector's post: Agree also. Running time has nothing to do with subject matter/content, i.e. genre. "Short" might be used as a keyword, however; or else TMDB needs to add a field to Runtime to distinguish formats such as shorts, features, serials, multiparts (non-serials), maybe others (?epics).

Seria possível adicionar os Gêneros: Suspense e Biografia, em Português (Brasil)? Ficaria muito mais precisa as nossas correções....

Hi,
Would it be possible to add a genre for Sport(s)? There's a lot of movies/TV shows on here that could do with being added to this genre. An example being - https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/1082844-manny-pacquiao-unstoppable-force on IMDB it is listed as Sport - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt24132988/
Thanks

I agree to them above.
in terms of movies I agree to @lohe that we need short as a genre for reasons he stated. (Animation should be kept though, why TV Movie exists idk either). It's a problem for third parties - and it's users - too, letterbox has decided to define everything with 40 minutes or less as a short since this information is not at tmdb(the key word segment is a kinda low priority task when editing).. "Sports" is also needed, since there are many sports films, documentaries, talks and more in the database, the core content of which is then not recorded in the genres, only in the keywords (in case someone has added it).
I'd like to see biography as well.
