UPDATED: Production start date of The Witcher Season 2

We’ve learned via a production agency list that filming is currently planned to start on February 17, 2020. As per our previous report, filming may wrap in early August, but that remains unconfirmed.

Keep in mind that these dates always shift for various reasons, so even February 17 may not be the final one yet. For comparison, Season 1 was planned to enter production on October 18, 2018, then got pushed back to November 5, then pushed forward again to October 29.

Speaking to Digital Spy and other press, Cavill revealed how he changed the voice he used for Geralt of Rivia during one particular take, having voiced him differently in previous scenes. 

"I had to find something which represented Geralt's directness and stony exterior immediately, so everyone understood who the character was at his core – and I found the voice which did that. It happened naturally one day for a scene.

He added: "Then I spoke to Alik, the director, and Lauren. I said, 'Look this is what I've done. First of all, sorry, and second of all, I really like it, what did you think?' They both listened to it and I think they both liked it, and I'm very glad I did do that because for me, it's a very strong representation of who Geralt is. A means of doing a lot more with a lot less."

‘The Witcher’s’ demon slayer is a Man of Steel with a ‘heart of gold’

That this gorgeous guy also has a “heart of gold” comes as no surprise to us: The day before we met Henry, the 36-year-old British actor patiently and politely worked his way through a throng of screaming and swooning fans for almost two hours—to talk to them, ask for their names, take selfies and sign autographs!

We have yet to meet a star with as much patience and kindness to fans, unlike many entitled “starirays” in this country who think it’s beyond them to spend a few seconds of their precious time with the very people whose patronage and loyalty allow them to stay relevant in Tinseltown.

“That, for me, was a pleasure,” Henry beamed warmly as he stood up to shake our hand when we entered the Murphy Room of Conrad Manila.

“Some of those people were there since 1 a.m. So, it’s the least I could do for them,” he said of his generous feat at the fan meet the day before our meeting.

OK, we probably sound like a fan. But it’s hard to hold back one’s admiration for a celebrity who is as great-looking as he is considerate.

The Witcher’s first season is unconventional and messy. It’s failed by its convoluted structure, which ultimately restricts character growth, and prevents the show from having any true sense of depth. This makes for an unsatisfying big picture, but thankfully there are plenty of things to enjoy in its individual components. Henry Cavill has found his perfect match in Geralt of Rivia, and his appreciation of the role helps elevate all of the White Wolf’s storylines above their imperfections.

Verdict: 6.5

David Griffin

Season 1 of The Witcher is simply too literal of a retelling of Andrzej Sapkowski’s short stories about Geralt, Ciri, and Yennefer. While the action set pieces and fight choreography are superb, the characters never get a chance to fully develop under the weight of the scripts, which try too hard to remain faithful to the books… What works in a novel doesn't always translate well to screen.

Despite passionate performances from its cast and some stunning fight choreography, Season 1 of The Witcher never quite adds up to the sum of its disparate parts, with clunky dialogue and some distracting visual effects undermining the rollicking joy of what is essentially a fantasy roadshow stuffed with monsters and magic. Henry Cavill and Anya Chalotra help anchor the story with emotional weight (although Geralt and Yennefer’s chemistry remains unconvincing, mostly because we don’t get to see their relationship develop over time), and some of Geralt’s standalone monster quests are diverting enough to amuse, but the show’s unnecessarily convoluted structure leaves Ciri’s storyline feeling like an afterthought and Geralt’s overall character development stalled.

There is no central mystery to the structure of the show […] The jumpiness is a distraction that ultimately disrupts our ability to track character development and kills some of the tension. […] What we’re left with is a story that hops about with Monster of the Week episodes, but diverts us too much to keep the main plot in sight. It doesn’t help that the first season’s menagerie of monsters fails to impress. […] If that sounds overwhelmingly negative, know that I did still enjoy watching the show. There are genuine moments of surprise and excitement. Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, and Anya Chalotra are all very effective as the show’s trio of leads. Joey Batey is appropriately both annoying and likeable as Jaskier (=Dandelion). The sword fighting sequences are excellent -- and though the show makes you wait for it, there are some visually exciting magic combat sequences as well. Sonya Belousova’s musical score is also very effective

They almost did in Season 1, but caught it in time. That's the last time we should compare The Witcher to Game of Thrones, though, since the show has had enough of that

It has only been available on the streaming service for a matter of days.

But already The Witcher has had an astonishing rise to the top and has become one of Netflix's highest rating original series on IMDb, just days after its December 20 release.

According to Forbes, the show kicked off with a rating of 8.9, which narrowly edged it ahead of shows including Black Mirror, Narcos, Peaky Blinders, Stranger Things and House of Cards - who had scores of 8.8.

However, it soon slipped down to 8.8 [8.5 now], meaning it now sits among Netflix's highest ranking TV heavyweights.
