Biography

Jay is an award-winning filmmaker known for his unique talent in crafting understated comedies that strike the perfect balance between wit and heart. His work predominantly focuses on the British East/Southeast Asian experience, delving into themes of family relationships, interculturality, identity, and self-discovery.

With a calm and compassionate approach to his craft, Jay infuses his storytelling with a cheeky edge that sets his work apart. His dedication to representation is evident, as he actively seeks out collaborations with underrepresented voices, particularly from the BESEA/ESEA talent community.

Jay's journey in the world of entertainment began as an actor, gracing the screens of popular TV shows such as "Doctors" on BBC, "Rain Dogs" on BBC/HBO MAX, and "Grace" on ITV. In 2013, Jay co-founded Wolfpack Productions Ltd., a creative hub where he produced several award-winning web series and short films. His exceptional work even earned him a spot on the shortlist for the Nespresso Talents UK award in 2018.

As a director, Jay further expanded his creative repertoire. He directed the compelling monologues "Stepping Stone" and "Choice" for Creating Apart, an ACE-funded showcase dedicated to emerging ESEA actors. He also had the privilege of shadowing director Mingyu Lin on the serial drama "Hollyoaks" gaining invaluable insights into the craft.

Jay's talents extend into the realm of writing, where he has garnered recognition and acclaim. His comedy-horror pilot script, "Hypsteries," was a Quarter-Finalist in the prestigious Shore Scripts Half-Hour TV Pilot Competition. Additionally, his comedy-drama pilot, "Withstanding the Heat," achieved longlisting status in the BBC Writers Room and All 3 Media New Comedy Voices competitions. His short film pitch, "Pops," was also shortlisted for the BBC Comedy Short Form Development Fund, showcasing his versatility and creativity.

In 2023, Jay was named an associate artist of B3 Media after being selected for the B3 Media Origins development and mentoring program. Furthermore, Jay emerged as a finalist in Pact's Diversity & Inclusion scheme, securing a coveted position at South Shore Productions, where he currently serves as a Development Trainee.

Beyond his artistic endeavours, Jay enjoys indulging in his guilty pleasure: cinnamon swirls and offering unsolicited advice at inappropriate moments...
